Graduate Certificate in Gerontology

The Certificate in Gerontology program is designed for students who have received a Bachelors degree or higher. The certificate is designed to meet the needs of professionals who have an interest in the aging population or who may currently work in the field of aging, but would like to increase and/or formalize their knowledge base. All courses are offered in a completely online format. Credits received in the Certificate program are applicable to the Master's degree in Gerontology. The Certificate consists of 18 credit hours: four required core courses and two electives. Courses may be eligible for transfer into another graduate or post-professional program, plan of study, or curriculum.

Certificate Goals:

  1. Provide students with a knowledge base that prepares, supports, and enhances their ability to work with a diverse population of older adults
  2. Prepare students for professional positions serving older adults
  3. Provide the academic background and experience required to pursue advanced studies in gerontology at the master's level
  4. Emphasize a broad, interdisciplinary approach regarding an aging population
  5. Enable students to fulfill leadership roles in the public and private sectors where knowledge and expertise regarding aging populations is imperative
  6. Emphasize the importance and relevance of the relationship between aging populations in the community and other professional providers

Certificate requirements:
18 credit hours including:

  • 4 Core Courses
  • 2 Electives (one of which must be a practicum if the student does not have previous experience working with an older population)
